Simultaneous Interpreting Services
Simultaneous interpreting is real-time interpreting, and the speaker does not need to pause while the interpreter works. It is a much more expensive mode of interpreting, since it requires a lot of equipment and technology, and at least two interpreters are required for one language (simultaneous interpreter can only work for up to 30 minutes at a time before having to take a break as the level of concentration required is so high). During simultaneous interpreting, interpreters sit in soundproof booths and listen to the proceedings through headphones at the same time simultaneously repeating what is being said into a microphone for transmission to the audience headsets. As the interpreters are isolated from the proceedings in their sound-proof booths, there is no limit to the number of concurrent languages which can be catered for. Delegates can simply select their preferred language by changing channels on their headsets.
